Not all Vatians speak a unified language. Though Vatian Common does exist, not all city-states use the language. As such, translators are in high-demand when officials call for a meeting or have business to attend in other city-states.

Though there is the existence of digital translators, but they aren't widely used due to a number of reasons. There are factors such as cost, accuracy, and signal. State of the art digital translators are extremely expensive, and it is much cheaper to hire a traditional translator. Second is the accuracy of said digital translators. Vatia's languages are deeply rooted in slang and code switching, and its languages are ever-changing with new words and meanings being created. Third is the signal, digital translators need a signal from the Beacon and sometimes government officials travel to areas where the Beacon's signal is weak.

But there is a digital translator being developed that doesn't require a Beacon signal, however, it will cost officials an entire body's worth of credits to purchase.
